Oliver Dorfer (Linz 1963) began his artistic career as an autodidact, using pigments and shellac on plaster in his archaic-looking older works, borrowing from the technique of fresco. Later Dorfer developed a pictorial system between fiction and reality with stereotypes and visual codes from design, comics, photography and film. In Dorfer's paintings, figuration and abstract sign language form an artistic syntax, which is combined with cipher-like elements. His latest interpretations of Pop Art contain different layers of time, like a cinematic vision. Oliver Dorfer won a Bauholding Kunstförderpreis in 1995, the predecessor of the STRABAG Artaward.
