Kurt Moldovan (Vienna 1918-1977 Vienna) first worked as a precision mechanic before taking up his graphic studies at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. After World War II and war service on the Eastern Front, Moldovan continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts with Herbert Boeckl and Sergius Pauser. In addition to painting, printmaking and drawing, the artist was also involved in illustration, art criticism and stage design, and was active as an essayist and writer. As a founding member of the legendary Art Club, Moldovan participated in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad from 1947. Longer study visits and travels, including to France, England, Italy, Spain, the USA, Mexico and Morocco, remained Moldovan's lifelong source of artistic inspiration. In terms of content, he was interested not only in depictions of cities and landscapes, but also in political and mythological themes. His peculiar style made him one of the most recognized and incisive draftsmen and watercolorists of Austrian post-war modernism. In 1950 he participated in the Venice Biennale, and in 1954 in the Sao Paulo Biennale. In 1968 Kurt Moldovan was honored with the Grand Austrian State Prize.
