Herbert Brandl (Graz 1959) became known for his large-format, abstract landscape paintings, which are characterized by impasto and dynamic color application. They are dramatic experiences of nature that viewers experience in an interplay of incredible closeness and great distance in Brandl's paintings. The focus of the works is always color as such; they are dynamic and full of energy and characterized by the intense tension between light and color, between white and strong coloration. Herbert Brandl taught at the University of Applied Arts Vienna from 1985 to 1991 and represented Austria at the Venice Biennale in 2007.
