Wolfgang Stifter (Ottensheim 1946) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Maximilian Melcher. Stifter's paintings are said to have a significant balance, although he radically intertwines graphic and painterly moments. These are kept in a convincing balance, but are often countered with barely legible scripturalisms. Stifter likes to stretch his formal-aesthetic considerations into a narrative framework, thereby tempting the viewer to take a pleasurable, associative path across the picture plane. In his most recent series of paintings, a "new lightness" can be discovered when the contours escape from the associated, pastel-colored painting surfaces. Parallel to this, canvases with dense colors are created, illustrating the contrasts in Stifter's work and giving weight to his oeuvre. Carl Aigner
