Franco Kappl (Klagenfurt 1962) was the first winner of the Bauholding Kunstförderpreis, the predecessor of the STRABAG Artaward, in 1994. The Carinthian artist studied painting with Arnulf Rainer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and at the Royal College of Art in London. The pictorial space in Kappl's work is characterized by the interplay of an intuitive, dynamic ductus and purposefully placed structures. In the dense, tension-filled works on paper and canvas, expressive rhythms and a strong, earthy colorfulness merge with sensitively placed graphic elements, thus generating an immense painterly force.
