Chen Xi (Shanghai 1966) studied at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts and at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In his works, wall objects, drawings and ink paintings, he devotes himself entirely to reduction. In doing so, he oscillates between abstraction and apparent representationalism and uses a wide variety of materials, such as wood, ink, rice paper, pen and canvas. Modernity and tradition merge in Chen Xi's ink works. His works appear delicate and dynamic at the same time. In 2001, Chen Xi was awarded a Bauholding Kunstförderpreis, the predecessor of the STRABAG Artaward.
