Peter Pongratz (Eisenstadt 1940) is one of Austria's outstanding contemporary artists. As a painter, musician, stage designer and author, he is always in search of individual and original forms of expression. His work is characterized by a satirical and socially critical realism and always consciously turns anti-academic against both the purely gestural formal and the informally abstract. In search of authenticity in art, the artist draws inspiration from Art Brut, children's drawings and tribal art. He aptly describes his paintings as "snapshots from my not exactly calmly drifting inner river." Pongratz's oeuvre is emotive and intense, a riot of color, preferably primary colors, spread across paper and canvas. The artist is an outstanding colorist who knows how to use color radically and combine it with writing, forms and symbols. Chaos and order merge in his paintings into a colorful body of work with the highest recognition value. Peter Pongratz is represented in the STRABAG Artcollection with numerous works on canvas and paper from over five decades.
