Kiki Kogelnik (Graz 1935-1997 Vienna) is one of the most important Austrian artists after 1945. Her oeuvre includes painting, sculpture, graphic art, performance and installation. Kogelnik studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna together with Hans Hollein, Maria Lassnig and Arnulf Rainer and belonged to the young avant-garde. Her early work comprises mainly abstract painting; after graduating, Kogelnik moved to New York for many years. At that time, Pop Art was just establishing itself as an art movement in the American art metropolis. Kogelnik was in contact with Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg and quickly found her way into the new artistic environment. "Pop became a way of life" for Kiki Kogelnik. She increasingly dealt with feminist themes and tried to dismantle female clichés in an ironic way. In many works, the human body or self-expression are in the focus. Despite her early death, Kiki Kogelnik remains a role model for other generations of artists.
