Bernhard Buhmann (Bregenz 1979) studied painting and sociology at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and at the University of Vienna. In 2008 he was awarded a recognition of the STRABAG Artaward. His paintings are contemporary, sensitive mirrors of everyday life. The spectrum of protagonists is correspondingly broad, with a colorful team of clowns, fantasy creatures and bizarre flying machines populating the canvases. Early works such as Schmetterling bear witness to an intensive examination of classical art historical themes and modes of representation as well as an interest in dramatizing the pictorial event through the targeted play of light and shadow. In current works Bernhard Buhmann has found his way to an individual, color-intensive abstraction, although the figure still recurs as a motif.
