Erik Sturm (Rudolstadt 1982) studied communication design at the Merz Akademie Stuttgart as well as sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart and at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in Budapest. His artistic work focuses on the examination of public space and its materials and phenomena. Themes that occupy him include advertising and billboards or urban change, mobility and environmental pollution. In his objects and installations, Erik Sturm processes materials such as paper, steel and dust, which he finds as residues or sedimented deposits and which he further examines, contextualizes and processes. For example, Sturm processes the fine dust found in cavities in the masonry of Stuttgart's Neckartor into black pigment or dissects the layers of old poster columns, thereby uncovering "sediments" of times past. Erik Sturm lives and works in Stuttgart. In 2018 he was awarded a recognition prize of the STRABAG Artaward International.
