The Swiss artist Julia Steiner (Büren zum Hof 1982) studied art at the Bern University of the Arts and at the Berlin Academy of the Arts, art history at the University of Bern and art education at the Bern University of Education. In 2017 she was selected as the winner of the STRABAG Artaward International. Her works on paper and nylon are present and free flowing at the same time. Involving and introverted. Dominant and fragile. Julia Steiner's work is characterized by the simultaneity of such different qualities. She applies black gouache or pigments to white sheets of paper, walls, or transparent nylon without prior sketches. The lightness of the paintings is rooted in a consistency that owes much to the vigorous application of dry paint with bristle brushes, sometimes with drawing precision, sometimes with painterly blurriness, razor-sharp to blurred.
