Vienna-based South Korean-born Miye Lee (Jeonju/South Korea 1970) creates light, positive imagery on mostly square canvases that harken back to traditional Korean art and coloring. Open, unprimed surfaces contrast with dynamically applied paint. In earlier works, the artist used a muted color scheme. Today, brightly intense circular formations and sometimes boldly and emotionally placed brushstrokes or splashes of color combine to create an abstract, gestural painting that is timeless, clear and poetic. Miye Lee, who studied with Christian Ludwig Attersee at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, received a recognition award from the Bauholding Kunstförderpreis, the predecessor of the STRABAG Artaward, in 1999.
