Eva Schlegel (Hall in Tirol 1960) is one of Austria's most successful artists; her extensive oeuvre includes painting, installation, and object and media art. Schlegel studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and was professor of art and photography at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1997 to 2006. In 2011 she was responsible for the Austria Pavilion at the Venice Biennale as commissioner. Schlegel's images blend photographic objectivity and painterly blurriness. Her "cloud paintings," for example, are either transferred onto a chalk base using a chemical process and then coated with several layers of varnish and oil paint, or she prints her photographic originals onto lead plates using the screen-printing process, whose shimmering veil lends the images depth and liveliness.
