Günther Schatzdorfer (Grieskirchen 1952-2011 Vienna) studied painting and printmaking in Vienna, Berlin and Bremen and was active as a travel and culinary writer as well as a painter and graphic artist. In addition to Vienna, the busy artist also lived in Duino, Isonzo and Piave from the 1970s. The northern Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and in particular the countryside surrounding Trieste, were always a source of inspiration for his pictorial and literary work. He himself described it as follows: “In my way of traveling, not only the materials for the next books and stories accumulate as if by themselves, but also the richness in my soul. I feel gifted by the encounters.” His love of the simple things in life and his fondness for Italy are also reflected in his paintings. Schatzdorfer portrayed his immediate surroundings - the Italian landscape, the sea, ships, but also city architecture, street corners, individual house facades - always focusing on small details and deliberately chosen, limited sections, which brought seemingly insignificant elements to the center of the pictorial action.
