On canvas, paper, and aluminum plates, Karl Kriebel (Vienna 1968) experiments with the possibilities of spatiality. Graphic-geometric markings and vertically, horizontally, or obliquely running lines give the impression of architectural constructs and create an illusory depth. The grids of lines, mostly in black and grayscale, are superimposed on thinly applied, shimmering layers of color in subtle shades of yellow and blue or off-white. In the interplay of free painting process and graphic construction, one line results in the next, creating a spatial sensation and atmospheric elegance. In 2002, Kriebel was awarded a special prize from the Bauholding Kunstförderpreis, the predecessor of the STRABAG Artaward.
