Maria Lassnig (Kappel am Krappfeld 1919-2014 Vienna) is one of the most important contemporary artists. Determining for her work is the so-called "body awareness", the exploration of the "body feeling", the own state of mind and physical sensations. In numerous self-portraits Maria Lassnig expressed the results of this self-analysis. Exceptional color compositions, tortured, battered bodies, and agitated gestures combine to create a drastic, deeply stirring body of work. Maria Lassnig was a co-founder of informal painting in Austria and shaped the emancipation of female artists in a male-dominated art world.
