Johannes Daniel (Halle/Saale, DE 1987) studied art history and philosophy before devoting himself to painting at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig. During a semester abroad in Warsaw, he became aware of the peculiarity of Polish advertising aesthetics. Since then, his works have been based on set pieces from digital images, advertising and (social) media. Daniel does not actively search for content; rather, the themes emerge from the painting process. The working process of Johannes Daniel always begins non-representationally. The artist applies paint to the canvas without having a specific intention for a concrete motif. Gradually he reacts to the expressive gestures and adds figurative excerpts. The fragmentary visualizes itself as a multi-layered representation in this process.
Johannes Daniel received a recognition award of the STRABAG Artaward International in 2019.
