Christian Schwarzwald (Salzburg 1971) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Gunter Damisch and received the STRABAG Artaward in 2005. Since 2017, he has headed the class for graphic and printmaking techniques at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Schwarzwald is known for his wall installations consisting of paintings and drawings. Faces, abstract patterns, architectural elements, organics, objects - all of these are rigorously worked through in numerous drawings and combined into blocks of work. The individual drawing is thereby part of a complex, larger system. Schwarzwald creates poetic installations that encompass entire rooms and take in visitors as they enter. The artist says: "I like it when you can “enter” pictures. When the distance that we need to think clearly, to judge, to form an opinion falls away. Images can shake these scaffolds of rightness, solidity and meaningfulness. And that's what I like to play with."
