Gerlinde Thuma (Vienna 1962) studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna with Maria Lassnig and was awarded the Bauholding Kunstförderpreis, the predecessor of the STRABAG Artaward, in 1997. Her works reflect her observations of nature and thematically revolve around addressing contrasts, tranquility and change. While hiking and traveling, she perceives her surroundings like a film, from which she filters out individual motifs and abstracts forms and makes them the starting point for her paintings. In the characteristic combination of acrylic paint and black charcoal, Thuma's painting alternates between naturalism and abstraction, with doubling playing an important role: One and the same motif is rendered under different formal aspects, often in a different color scheme or light situation. Often a light and a dark half form a strong contrast and thus exert completely different effects on the recipients.
