Gustav Hessing (Czernowitz/UA 1909-1981 Vienna) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Ferdinand Andri and Karl Fahringer. During the war, the National Socialists imposed a professional ban on Gustav Hessing; after the end of the war, the artist became co-founder and first president of the artists' group "Der Kreis" in 1946. From 1957 Hessing taught as professor and head of a master class at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, from 1958 to 1960 and from 1969 he was a member of the Vienna Secession. Two years before his death in 1979, the Austrian Gallery Belvedere in Vienna showed a major retrospective. In his oil paintings, watercolors, prints, and tapestry designs, Hessing devoted himself intensively to portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, and in his early work he was decisively influenced by his involvement with the painting of Paul Cézanne. The STRABAG Artcollection holds over 35 works by Gustav Hessing.
