Christian Ludwig Attersee (Bratislava/SK 1940) grew up in Aschach near Linz and on the shores of Lake Attersee, where he first made a career as a sailor. His artist name is also owed to this period. From 1957 Attersee studied stage architecture and painting at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, but was also active as a musician, writer, designer and filmmaker. Today, he is one of Austria's most internationally renowned artists and is an important representative of contemporary representational painting in Europe. His works are characterized by their figural-symbolic style, bright colors and dynamic brushstrokes. From the turn of the millennium on, the works are usually dominated by one color tone each. The themes revolve around beauty, eroticism and sensuality. For Attersee, the very activity of painting implies a sensual act in which he as an artist can completely spend himself. In 1977 the artist took part in documenta 6 in Kassel, and in 1984 he represented Austria at the Venice Biennale. In 1998 he was awarded with the Grand Austrian State Prize and in 2005 the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art. From 1990 to 2009 Attersee taught the master classes for painting, animated film and tapestry at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
