Andrey Klassen (1984 Irkutsk/RU) studied at the Academy of Art in Irkutsk and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. For some years now, Andrey Klassen has deliberately refrained from using color. Despite the supposed reduction, Klassen's works are extremely complex arrangements that are ambiguous, uncanny and funny in equal measure. The artist himself longs for rest from color and asceticism in technique. At the interface between painting and drawing, he opted for ink painting and adapted it to become his personal technique. He does not make any preliminary sketches, but immerses himself directly in the sheet. Working with ink requires a very precise approach, as supposed "mistakes" cannot be corrected. Nevertheless, Andrey Klassen's compositions are extremely dense, with a multitude of ideas, thoughts and references jostling with and on top of each other on the picture surface, giving rise to numerous associations. Klassen describes this as follows: "With ink on paper, it is possible to paint a picture, but also to write a book - that suits my approach very well, because I tell many stories in my pictures."
The artist was awarded a recognition prize of the STRABAG Artaward International 2024.
