Helmut Swoboda (Amstetten 1958) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Wolfgang Hollegha. Nature is a constant source of inspiration for the artist - land, water and mountain landscapes, fog, snow, spray and rain form the basis of his painting. He observes the course of the water, its movements, the flow, the rhythm and transfers these impressions step by step onto the canvas. The impression of nature is always the starting point, the painting process develops slowly and labor-intensive. Priming with several layers of chalk ground is followed by egg tempera painting, whereby the artist's knowledge of the painting processes is essential: how do the different colors behave in the liquid state, which pigments rise, which sink. The artist works with brushes, sponges and scraps of fabric as well as with found objects from nature such as moss or clay, and also always takes into account the structures of the respective carrier material. For Helmut Swoboda the use of color is always a balancing act to achieve depth and spatial impression and to generate the very special atmosphere and tension of his images.
