Merlin Kratky (Vienna 1989) studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna with Erwin Wurm. His work includes object art, collages in mixed media, works on canvas and installations for indoor and outdoor spaces, whereby the artist always experiments with a wide range of different materials and contrasts them in his works. Wit and irony characterize Kratky's work, as does a deliberate juxtaposition of natural and artificial elements. The series The Day Philosophy becomes Mainstream, for example, consists of fabrics sewn together with oil paint, spray paint, and charcoal - the various geometrically arranged patterns are reminiscent of brickwork, wall surfaces, or retro wallpaper. In his small-format sculptures, Kratky creates a polarity between the natural and artificial worlds: He uses industrial materials such as concrete or polyester to deliberately re-make natural objects, creating plenty of irritation. Kratky has found an independent and unmistakable artistic language with his minimalist yet shrill hybrids.
