Joseph Marsteurer (Miesenbach 1963) studied music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and art history and philosophy at the University of Vienna. In his works he proceeds like a researcher. He meticulously analyzes and arranges the individual components and materials he draws upon for his work. Marsteurer produces acrylic color sheets, some of which are transparent, which he measures, weighs, and archives before applying them to acrylic glass plates. The results visible to the viewer, however, are only part of the conceptually designed works. The reception of his works also plays an elementary role. Many of his art pieces have neither top or bottom, nor front or back. Balance and equivalence are part of the aesthetic concept. This process of emergence, change and decay is essential for Marsteurer. The encounter of space and color material thereby provides a multitude of possible combinations, arrangements and contexts. In 1999 Marsteurer was awarded the Bauholding Kunstförderpreis, the predecessor of the STRABAG Artaward.
