After an apprenticeship as a textile pattern draftsman, Kurt Welther (Bad Vöslau 1957) studied painting with Anton Lehmden at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Numerous study visits, including to Spain, Italy, Romania and Mexico followed. In addition to the regularly recurring link between image and writing, the fascination of the patterns from his apprenticeship can still be felt in his current painting: Welther works on his pictures with self-made painting rollers and lays ornaments and patterns like veils over the painted surface. In 1995, Kurt Welther was awarded a Bauholding Kunstförderpreis, the predecessor of the STRABAG Artaward.
