Karl Bauer (Graz 1905-1993 Klagenfurt) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and worked first as a teacher, later as a freelance painter, graphic artist and illustrator, before he was drafted into military service in 1942. In 1946 Bauer returned from captivity (USA) and settled in Carinthia as a painter and graphic artist. In addition to panel paintings, monumental wall mosaics and stained glass windows are central components of his artistic legacy. Bauer's motifs included landscape depictions of his immediate surroundings in Carinthia, portraits and religious themes, using a wide variety of materials - from gouache, charcoal and oil to fresco secco techniques, stained glass and mosaics. Karl Bauer left behind an extensive body of work in public spaces, such as the Gateway to the South fresco secco in the main hall of the Villach train station, the mosaics for the Stations of the Cross at the Landesgedächtnisstätte Kreuzbergl in Klagenfurt, and the Annunciation, an apsis mosaic and stained glass window in the Spittal/Dau parish church.
