Gottfried Salzmann (Saalfelden 1943) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and has lived in Paris and in Saint-Paul-de-Vence on the Côte d'Azur since the mid-1960s. Pure landscapes without any human emotion define the artist's work. Wide fields, lonely houses, canals, avenues, coasts, but also roofscapes of various world cities, impressive vertical interior views of French cathedrals and fascinating weather moods characterize Gottfried Salzmann's work. In his paintings, mostly watercolors, the artist's power of observation manifests itself: he paints a clearly defined view of the landscape, plays with visual axes and perspective, and in this way constructs his own pictorial world. Not infrequently, he uses a helicopter flight for his unusual motifs, which gives him different perspectives in the metropolises of the world. In countless cityscapes, including New York, San Francisco and Paris, the artist combines watercolor with mixed media, photography and collage. Over decades, Salzmann has elevated the art of watercolor painting to an excitingly novel, masterful level and loves to explore the medium's possibilities.
