ABOUT THE ARTIST
Goschka Gawlik, Art critic and curator, Vienna
Marcin Zawicki, born in Szczecin in 1985, teaches painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk. As one of the winners of the STRABAG Artaward International 2021, the accomplished painter and graphic artist will be showing a selection of his paintings and objects, naming his theatrum naturae et artis after the artificial figure made of clay “Golem” deriving from Jewish mysticism and literature. The polysemy of symbolic meanings associated with this mystical creature brought to life - from doppelganger or pseudo-existence to terminator and artificial intelligence - becomes for Marcin Zawicki as much a symbol for the enigmas of the processes of creation as newly imagined roles of a demiurge figure shrouded in myth.
Zawicki's pictorial worlds usually show a dense accumulation of post-industrial hybrid pseudo-vegetation and pseudo-fauna, in which dinosaurs, slippery worms, and mushrooms eclectically pair with the art of the Old Masters, imagining a kind of surreal comic archeology that, despite the impression of scientific systematization, is more hallucination than document. At the same time, they evoke the topos of the artist as a pseudo-demiurge who creates his own worlds. Though, given the status of the props with which this world is arranged, one may also be reminded of the "second-hand creator" from Bruno Schulz's famous "Tailors’ Dummies” (The Street of Crocodiles). - Goschka Gawlik
