Self-determined, bold and unflinchingly direct. Often posing in front of a monochrome background, it is - above all - the eyes of the people portrayed by Amoako Boafo that captivate and irritate the viewer. By focusing on the self-confident representation of Black people living in Austria, Boafo invites the audience to engage with the interrelation of looking and being seen, and related visions and fantasies. The points of focus are constantly shifting and no-one can escape, for while the observers look at the people depicted, they too have become objects of their gaze.
The artworks presented in the show at STRABAG Artlounge are part of the Black Diaspora Series, on which Amoako Boafo has been working since 2018. Boafo is known for his rich and idiosyncratic brushwork and unconventional references to fashion, pop culture and painting. The Vienna-based artist has recently started to show his work internationally. Recent exhibitions include I see me(2019) at Roberts Projects in Los Angeles and Punch Show (2019) curated by Nina Chanel Abney with Jeffrey Deitch in New York.
