ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Prof. Ernst Hilger, gallery owner
Alfred Hrdlicka would have turned 90 this year, today he is one of Austria's most important artists after 1945 and shaped the domestic art landscape like no other. To honor him, the STRABAG Kunstforum presents a cross-section of different cycles and creative periods in the exhibition "Homage to Alfred Hrdlicka". Hrdlicka consistently adhered to his figurative-expressive style and was concerned with the depiction of the human figure throughout his life. His sculptures, paintings, drawings and etchings reflect Hrdlicka's critical attitude of mind and his interest in themes of world history. Historical events were dealt with in an unembellished way, for example the French Revolution or the horrors of the Second World War, which he had to witness as a child. They sharpened his political awareness and directed his artistic focus to psychological and physical extremes. Pain, violence, death and unequal power relations dominate his work, in which he depicted man in all his abysses. Yet Hrdlicka remained a perpetual humanist, once saying modestly, "Nothing strikes me. I notice something." We would like to express our sincere thanks to the lenders Galerie Ernst Hilger, Hilger Collection and Sammlung Sanziany.
