Born in Styria, Karl Stark (Glojach 1921-2011 Klosterneuburg) is one of the main representatives of Austrian Expressionism. After four years of war service, he studied with Herbert Boeckl at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1947. Stark resisted the then prevailing development of large parts of the art scene towards abstract art throughout his life. His naturalistic oil paintings, in which he applied the strong colors impasto to the canvas, show mainly landscapes and still lifes, later also portraits and nudes. He spent the early 1950s with his family in Carinthia, making the landscape there one of the main motifs of his work. From 1958 Karl Stark lived in Vienna as a freelance artist.
